Re: concerns for abnormal papFrom: click (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 31 Aug 2003 23:47:00 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I think I have the same kind of HPV as you. It is very uncommon that a mole on the cervix would NOT be HPV caused.. I did alot of research on this after it happene dto me--I've only been with three men and used condoms with two of the three; the third being a man i'm in long term relationship. I didn't know anything was wrong, but my pap came back abnormal. There are two main strains of "HPV" that cause "moles" on the cervix--one is high risk (can eventually develop into cervical cancer, after many years usually) and one is low risk (causes cosmetic problems or may block the entrace to the womb whcih can be a problem).. both are known, especially the latter, to be very common--about 80% of the population CARRIES the virus, and about 10% of those people have problems from it like you and me. That is probably why the doctor did not tell you and was not concerned about it. Next time you go in for a pap, ask them to do a DNA analysis to find out if it is high or low risk HPV is very easy to get, very common, and is more often than not just a cosmetic problem. The strains that show up on the cervix generally do not show any physical problems in men, although they CARRY the virus and can pass it along. HPV is so easy to get because it takes a very minimal amount of skin to skin contact to pass it. I am not a doctor but I would say most likely you do have HPV, and really you just need to monitor it and make sure you get it checked to see if it is the high risk strain or not....even if it is, the cure rate is excellent, especially with early treatment. If it is high risk strain, you have generally two options: continue to monitor to see if you fight it off (60% of people with HPV on the cervix end up fighting it off or putting it into regression within 2 years) by having a pap every 4 to 6 months until you get a string of normals, or you can have it treated (many options, the most common is cryotherapy which is less painful than having the biopsy if you had one).
