i'm not a doctor but have had similar symptoms myself so this is just my experience.

these symptoms you desribe (esp. if soapy water is stinging her when she washes) sound similar to bacterial vaginitis which usually isnt serious but does need to be treated if it doesn't clear up on its own. in my case i didnt have any very strange dischargeb or odor, just a lotof itching and/or burning/stinging and symptoms werent always consistent every time. definitely get tested for STD's since STD's can mimic vaginitis - esp. in women the symptoms may not be as obvious. the most common STD's that mimic her symptoms are easily treatable - chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichimoniasis, etc.

there are over-the-counter urine-testing strips available for home detection of urinary tract infection(look for the brand name "azo"). I havent used them myself so don't know how accurate they are but these are very simple tests and probably the same ones used in the doc's office. UTI's generally aren't serious either and if they are she would be feeling a hell lot worse.
