Re: switching from regular to generic brand BCPs (in response to theprevious reply)From: H (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 23 Jun 2003 18:39:03 -0500 (CDT)
The breakthrough bleeding can be pretty common on the low-dose pills. Usually, it indicates that the estrogen level has dropped below what your body is accustomed to. You're probably not pregnant, because this sounds like a hormonal side effect of the pill. Also, using condoms makes your chances of pregnancy pretty slim. I wouldn't think it's an infection either just because it happens so often on these low pills. There is probably still be enough estrogen and progestin to protect you. I just don't trust the generics as much because they aren't held to such a rigorous standard as the brand names. Missing your period might just be another side effect of the low dose, because your cycle is already messed up. I wouldn't worry too much yet because it may take a cycle or two to adjust to the pill. But if this pattern of bleeding is bothersome or worries you (and it sounds like it does), ask your doctor for a different prescription. She'll probably give you something with more estrogen. You don't normally ovulate on the pill; however, it is not 100%. The pill normally prevents ovulation 90-95% of the time, and it also changes the cervical mucous and uterine lining to prevent fertilization and implantation just in case ovulation occurs. So overall, it is 99% reliable with perfect use. If you miss pills, that increases your chances of ovulation. That's the main reason why some people can get pregnant on the pill - missing doses.
