This page has a chart with a list of many of the pills available in the United States: http://www.wdxcyber.com/ncontr13.htm The left column has the dosage of estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and the right column has the dosage of the progestin (several different types). As you can see, there are several pills lower in progestin than Ortho-TriCyclen. The OrthoEvra patch is lower than TriCyclen and has the same type of progestin. Some others are Alesse, Mircette, Levlen, Nordette, Desogen, Ortho-Cept, Ortho-Cyclen(identical to the third week on Tri-Cyclen). There is also NuvaRing, which has a much lower dose because it is time-released. Your doctor will have better knowledge of which pill is best for you - you should talk everything over and if you want to switch, he or she will recommend the best one for what you need.

It is possible to make a period come earlier by stopping your pack or going to placebos earlier. However, you may not be protected from pregnancy if you stop a pack early. It is important to take at least 21 days of active hormone pills in a row, without missing any, in order to be protected. If you have your normal placebo week for your period, then start a new pack and only take 14 days of pills, then stop again, there is a chance you could ovulate because you need at least 3 weeks in a row for protection. But if you take the first 21 days of one pack, then skip the period week by taking the first 14 days of the next pack (you take 5 weeks of active pills in a row with no period), then you should be protected. There aren't any proven health risks to doing this, except that you might have some spotting or your period might still come. But hey, you would have had bleeding anyway if you didn't skip your period, so what's the harm in that?
