Re: Is this an STD?From: sameasalways (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 6 Jun 2003 18:10:14 -0500 (CDT)
At Fri, You sound pretty normal to me, l ike maybe just an irritation of the normal oil producing glands that are on your labia. Regardless I woudln't worry too much about it. However its important you know, that when they do a pelvic and pap smear, they do not screen for STD's. Even when they do cultures for STDs they usually only culture for chlamydia and gonnorhea, sometimes Trichomoniasis if you have symptoms as well. In order to test for HPV they have to do a specific test, and that is truly the only way you would ever know if you had HPV (barring other symptoms such as genital warts). In order to test for herpes (HSV) you would only know by running a blood test for the two types. By the way, the HPV virus that causes actual genital warts (cauliflower like small wart/growths on the labia/penis) is actually a lot less dangerous to have than the type that causes cervical cancer. Regardless, most cases of HPV resolve on their own, though it can take quite awhile. (mine took 7 years of screening every 3 months, but eventually got better. I also had two children in that span of time). Now they can't even detect it in me. Even if something turns up, I just wanted you to know its not the end of the world....even if it feels like it at first. Take care!
