A mouth cold >sore is the same as genital herpes? ==================There are two different viruses that cause herpes. In the past, doctors felt that one particular virus caused genital herpes. They thought only one other particular virus caused oral herpers. Now they realize, that the two are interchangeable....one virus can be transmitted to the genital area and vice versa. They are HSV 1 and HSV II......both of the same family. Technically it doesn't matter which one you have, they both cause the samesymptoms and both can be transmitted to the oral or genital areas. Btw, the majority of the population has the traditionally coined "oral" herpes....it seems a lot of times we get it by the time we are 5 years old. Some people never have a coldsore and others suffer from them many times.....it just depends on the individual. Just because someone has never had a coldsore doesn't mean they aren't a carrier of the virus. Take care. (fever blisters, which only show up with high fever, are also the herpes virus...its just that in some individuals the herpes virus will only activate when the immune system has weakened).
