Going off the pill and missing periods

I have been taking the pill for several years. I originally started taking the pill because I stopped menstruating for a period of several months in my early twenties. I have tried to go off the pill several times for about 3 months at a time. Since I did not menstruate, I was put on Provera twice to jump start a period before starting the pill again. The side effects of the pill are making me extremely uncomfortable. I have gained weight, I am emotional, my breasts are enormous and I have lost all sex drive. I really want to stop taking the pill, but I am afraid that I will continue to show symptoms of amenorrhea. I am also concerned that I will not be able to tell if I am pregnant or not at the end of my cycle. Please advise. Thanks!
