Depo Provera question

I'm 18 and went for my first gyn appointment the other day for periods that last 3 weeks and then come again after a week. She suggested taking Depo Provera to stop my periods all together because I'm extremely anemic and can't afford all of this blood loss. My question is for anyone who may have taken depo provera. What kind of side effects are involved with taking this? My doc said that it may cause weight gain. Did anyone find this to be true and if so, was it a lot? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
