question about cycle length

I have a fairly straightforward question-- I am an 18 year old female, not sexually active, with polycystic appearing ovaries. I am of normal weight (body mass index is 20).

My question is this: What, exactly, does it mean when a doctor asks if periods are regular? I always assumed that "regular" periods simply meant that one didn't skip periods altogether for months at a time.

So, when asked if I have regular periods, I've always said yes. I will have cycles ranging from 18 days one cycle to 30+ the next, however.

Does regular simply mean that one is not oligo-amenorrheic, or does it mean that cycles are about the same length every time?

Thanks so much,
