First trip

I recently had my first visit to the gyn. I am 19 years old and a virgin, and prior to the exam I had never used tampons. The exam was very painful for me. The doctor couldn't get the speculum in all the way, and she couldn't get the Pap done. She advised me to start using tampons so that I will be more comfortable at my next visit. Will using tampons really help? Also, is there anything else I can be doing so that my next trip isn't as painful?
