Heavy bleeding during periods with lots of clots

I had a baby in Feb 2002 and the first few menstrual cycles I had were normal and every 28 days. About July 2002 my period was 2 weeks late, had home pregnancy tests that were NEG and a Quant Blood test which was also NEG. I started my period and it lasted 10 days ( I normally only have a 5 day) I bled heavily and had lots of clots. Ever since then my period has been on time (every 28 days) but I still bleed heavily the first few days and I still pass a lot of clots. Some of the clots are quarter sized or larger. Also, about 5 days after the last day I bleed I notice some residual brown tinged mucous or discharge when I go to the bathroom. Sometimes it is reddish or pinkish, but very little That can be off and on for a couple of days and it is NOT much, just enough to notice it. This started at the same time I had the very late period and has continued every month since.

A little history: 3 c sections and I am hypothyroid. My thyroid was last checked right after I had that first heavy period and it was normal. I take synthroid for my thyroid problem.

What could be causing these problems. Is my uterine lining too thick each month? I have a yearly checkup with my GYN in April.

Thanks Debbie
