allergic reaction or cold sores?

For the last 10-12 years (since I was about 9 years old), I have been getting little "blisters" on my lips. My doctor told me that they were nothing to worry about and that they were due to an allergic reaction. I guess he was right as they always happen when I eat something new, and if I don't have it again I won't get another one, but as soon as I do they reappear. My question to you is are these cold sores or the same as cold sores??? Could I give my partner herpes by giving him oral sex when I have them. Please help as I do not want to give him any std's. Thank you
