'first' gyno visit- nervous about next

I am a 21-yr old virgin. Recently I found out that I should have been to see a gyno, so I went to the school's clinic. I was slightly nervous as I have never been able to insert a tampon, but I figured that they dealt with stuff like that all the time so it wouldn't be a big deal. The woman who was giving me the exam used the smallest speculum they had, but I was in extreme pain. She told me to come back again. For the next day and a half, I was unable to sit down at all for more than an hour because the pain was so bad (I figured out some sort of position where I could lie and sleep for a few hours). I had aching and shooting pains for about a week afterwards. The gyno told me to practice with a tampon. Every time I get near there I freak out and can't go through with it. Just thinking about inserting something in there brings me to the verge of tears. I'm supposed to go to another gyno in a week. What should I do to make things more comfortable?
