Re: Syncope and periods

I have never actually fainted, but I get very light-headed and have had many near fainting experiences right before my period. For me, I think it has to do with loss of fluids. About a week before my period I get very water retentive. I pee very little during this time, despite same fluid intake. My fingers swell and get stiff, my pants get tight in the waist, and my blood pressure rises. Then a couple days before my period I start to release the water. I have to pee a ton every hour, again despite the same normal fluid intake. I think the drastic loss in water makes my blood volume decrease and/or my blood pressure drop, which makes it harder to get enough blood to my head. If I stand up quickly, I get very lightheaded until my heart starts pumping faster to get the blood up there. My theories may be wrong, but it seems to makes sense to me. A good thing to do when I feel lightheaded is to lay on the couch with my feet up high on the arm rest and my head down low on the cushion. This helps blood go to the head. The best way for me to keep fluids in during this time is to make sure I drink enough (but not too much, because excess water intake can actually cause you to retain less) and eat high salt foods. I like to snack on saltine crackers the best. Chicken soup works good for me too. I don't know if this will help you, but maybe you can pay more attention to how much you drink and how much you pee to see if something similar might be going on with you. Also see if your spells are related to standing up quickly. If you have any other comments or questions about this stuff, please write back. Maybe you should stop the pill for a while to see if your symptoms improve. That's what I'd do.
