birth control confusion

My doctor just recently prescribed me Ortho TriCyclen and told me to take it on the first day of my next period. Well a few days ago I started bleeding which I assumed was my period, so I took the first pill in my first pack. As it turns out I was just spotting, which is completely unusual for me to begin with, and the bleeding stopped after about 30 minutes. I was wondering if I needed to keep taking my pills or if I needed to wait until my period does actually start. My doctor is on vacation and I can't find nobody in her office or anywhere else that will answer my question. Thanks for your help.
