infertility/pelvic inflammatory diseaseFrom: Chris (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 06 Dec 2002 19:40:52 -0500
6 years ago I was admitted to the hospital with a pelvic infection caused by Chlamydia. I know I had the infection for no longer than 8 months but was hospitalized twice for it(again just over a month later). Originally when I was diagnosed I was given 4 pills(antibiotics) to be taken all together as a method of treatment. Within an hour of treatment I ended up getting sick. I returned to the doctor assuming she would prescribe another medication. I was told that there was no need for retreatment (even if I saw the capsules while vomiting). Although I didn't necessarily agree I wasn't a doctor and assumed I was in good hands. Around 6/7 months later I had really bad pelvic pain and she sent me for an ultrasound. She said it was fine. When I was admitted a week later to the hospital a second ultrasound showed that I had fluid in my uterus. Wouldn't that have showed up the week before? A women I know who lost her sister to cancer had a problem with the same doctor. They said she misread an ultrasound which could have caught the cancer earlier on and saved her sister's life. Am I wrong to assume that the infection was caused by the doctor's lack of concern and failure to recheck for the original infection? How long do you have to have an STD before it becomes a pelvic infection? How much damage can it do in 8 months? I have tried to talk to my (new) doctor about my concerns of infertility and was told the test would cost $10 000 and is not always conclusive so any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
