Most of the time you can tell by looking, though you have to spread the vaginal lips apart to see it clearly. Sometimes, a digital exam adds some information. The amount of bleeding varies widely, from little or none, up to menstrual flow or higher. I don't know of any links, but I am sure there are some. Try "hymen" in Google.
