oopherectomies

Recently my doctor recommended that I have my right ovary removed since I have a 6.5 cm x 6 cm dermoid tumor on the ovary. I feel very very unhappy about the idea of surgery. I am only 28, but the doctor has recommended this because she is afraid that the tumor might twist the ovary. She also says that it is most likely benign but that they should check anyway. But is this surgery absolutely necessary? Isn't there a way to shrink the tumor? Also will the removal of this ovary affect my hormones and will it make a hysterectomy more likely in the future?

I would appreciate any help and info on this topic. Thank you in advance for responding.
