Further, a midwife might misdiagnose any cervical lesions a doctor would regard as suspicious. A friend of mine died because of a nurse's incompetence in conducting a PAP smear and identifying obvious signs of cancer. Her family won a large settlement, but it wasn't much consolation to her three young children. And if a LAY midwife (not a nurse) is doing OB/GYN, that's even more alarming.
