Repost : very heavy periods in a 12 year old

My daughter, almost 13, began menstruating almost a year ago. The cycles are longer than 28 days- probably closer to 55 or 60. I know being irregular is common in the beginning, but my concern is that the flow is extremely heavy (no clots however; only very occasional, minor cramps). Is the heavy flow perhaps due to a longer cycle and this would resolve if and when she has shorter cycles?

If this is not the case- are there any suggestions? The only thing that comes to mind is birth control pills but I'd like to avoid hormones until absolutely necessary. I give her a multi-vitamin/iron supplement and her recent physical shows her iron level is fine.

Thanks.
