Very Heavy periods in 12 year old

My daughter, who is almost 13, began her periods almost one year ago. The cycles are longer than 28 days- probably in the range of 50 days or so, which I've heard is normal in the beginning. However, the flow is extremely heavy (no clots)- does the length of the cycle have anything at all to do with this and perhaps this will resolve over time? If not ,what is the cause- I think she's too young for fibroids.

What can be done? BC pills come to mind but I don't want her treated with hormones.
