Re: Will Someone Please Listen?From: Sarah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Oct 2002 12:37:13 -0600 (CST)
Since you are only 24, doctors are right to be skeptical of your current belief that you not only do not want to have children now, but will never want them. You are just barely an adult. Doctors are generally a good bit older than that, and have personal experience to guide them on how many choices made at 24 can be laughed at - or deeply regretted - with time and life experience. Time changes things. Permanent, irrevocable destruction of your ability to reproduce is the biggest life-affecting choice you can make short of suicide. And you are very young. I'm 40. I'm warning you. What you believe in your bones at 24 is subject to change. If you still feel the same way at thirty, or have a child in the interim, I suppose any doctor would be more inclined to help you close that door permanently. Since you are childless and only 24, even though you believe yourself certain, any doctor with a shred of wisdom about human nature is going to back off from you. I can understand the frustration with birth control. But I am strongly cautioning you to wait a few years before making such an irrevocable choice.
