I agree that the exam was inappropriate. Also, I am not quite sure why an intern would be required to have an exam at all. Perhaps someone who works in Human Resources could tell us more. Also, for the future: Employment physicals aren't as common as they once were because of a fear of lawsuits under the Amercian with Disabilities Act (ADA). As you choose an employer for your future career, you might want to keep this in mind. I'm not saying you shouldn't have medical exams (you should!), but you may want to keep your physical exams private. I have interviewed at several companies in the past couple years (I'm not a research chemist)and only one required a physical.
