Always had late menstruation

I am 20 years old and have never had a regular menstruation cycle. I began when I was 13 and throughout high school I assumed that my irregularity had to do with playing soccer, but now I am worried. I am a college student, so I don't have a consistent diet, but I do take vitamins. My boyfriend recently heard that late menstruation can put you at risk for certain other health problems and I was wondering how true this is. I have never gotten my period within the normal 28 day time frame and have only missed it once in the last few years. I haven't done that great of a job keeping track of dates (since there doesn't seem to be any reason to due to the unpredictability of them) but I would guess that my cycle averages about 36 days. They are always EXTREMELY heavy and last about 7 days. I have friends who know exactly what time of what day they will be starting and I am wondering exactly how strange is my situation? Should I find an OB or maybe go to the campus health clinic? I attend a large university, so the services are here for me, but I am worried about the doctors. Other students refer to our clinic as the "quack shack," which I think is related to their supposed tendency to tell everyone - including males - that they are pregnant. Please inform me of any possible serious health risks that I might need to see a doctor about. I am very afraid of the idea of the exams the OBs do, which is the reason I have avoided visiting one. PS - I have a history of breast cancer in the family.
