Daughter's annovulation and TSH levelFrom: Anna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 23 Sep 2002 08:39:28 -0500 (CDT)
My 14.5 yr old daughter hasn't gotten her period, though she looks physically ready. She takes depakote for a mood disorder, has been on it for 1.5 yrs. Recently my daughter had a well check the Dr ordered among other things a TSH and a T4 total. The T4 total came back within range and the TSH came back out of range 6.07. The Dr said this could be why she doesn't have her period yet, and also that it could be contributing to her mood disorder. Her last TSH check was 1.5 yrs ago and that was at 4.11..I am now finding out the least we should have been doing is watching that TSH # for the past 1.5 yrs... My questions would be CAN Depakote cause annovulation even though you haven't started menstruating yet can it effect your TSH level. CAN Hypothyroidism cause you NOT to get your period even when you haven't started it yet? The psychiatrist is telling us NOT to treat the TSH until it hits 10 and even then maybe not, she said that true hypothyroidism isn't Dx'd until your TSH hits around 40. She also said that most pediatricians will not treat such a low TSH but an endocrinologist would. When my daughter's Dr called with the first results she said this was easily treated, but we needed to do a few more tests to see if the TSH was consistantly high and she wanted an antibody test. We did that last week and the Dr should be calling today with those results. My daughter has the following symptoms of hypothyroidism: she feels cold when it's hot out, her hair is brittle and she was dx'd with a mood disorder. Any help would be appreciated.
