The exact cause of the irritable bowel syndrome is not fully understood as no organic cause is found.The symptoms you mentioned are the typical symptoms of the syndrome.In women it is more severe during the second half of the cycle as the progesterone aggerivates the condition.Diagnosis basically depends on the history[symptoms],pattern of bowel movements plus investigations.
