Child Menstruation

My daughter (age 11) recently came home from school with about an ounce of muddy colored discharge. She had thought her cycle had started, and had inserted a pad into her underwear. When she changed out the pad after getting home, and put in a fresh one, there was no more bleeding. Over the next few days, we waited for the cycle to continue, but it has not.

It has been a month now, and we expected perhaps for bleeding to begin again, but it has not. Could the bleeding have been something else? Since she is so young, I didn't really want to take her in for a pap smear, unless there was something serious to be worried about.
