Those points are valid yes, and I understand the importance of an exam as well as anyone else here. She was having pain and cramping which turned out to be because of a stomach/intestinal flu. Her doctor suspected this but referred her to a gyn for a pap smear also "just to check things out down there." Both her doctor and the Gyn should have known a 15 year old who wasn't sexually active should not need a pap smear. She did have the "do as you are told" mentality, and that's why I feel it should be the doctor's responsibility to evaluate the situation and the necessity of the procedure. A "just in case" attitude may not be the best if the risks to the patient's emotional well-being outweigh the risks in not having it done.
