Birth control and irregular periods

I am 19 years old, 110 lbs and have been on birth control for about a year. I am taking a break from the pill and this has been approximately a year now. Ever since I've stopped taking the pill, I've been getting my period every 2 to 2 and half weeks now. I have heard that you can get irregular periods due to the hormones from the pill messing up your system, but how come my period isn't going back to it's normal cycle? Does it take that long for your body to return back to it's normal functions and cycles?
