Re: HPV without warts?

Actually I wanted to comment of the "being positive that significant other has never had sexual contact with anyone else". I'm not saying that your boyfriend is lying or anything but just as a general message to all young women, never ever ever trust a sexual partner with what he "tells" you about his past sexual encounters. Bottom line is "better safe than sorry" and I have known too many people who have an STD because "he said he was a virgin" or something like that. The truth is that there are people that don't want to reveal their sexual past, AND there are people who may have had sexual contact but mistakenly think that STD's cannot be transmitted unless you have actual intercourse, so they choose to not tell you about a "sexual encounter" because it wasn't "having sex". There are STDs that can be transmitted without having actual sexual intercourse (like HPV) and there are even STD's that can be transmitted even if you're using condoms (through warts from HPV, or lesions from herpes). At the very very least, use a condom. If both partners are going to be trusting and honest with each other, then both partners should be screened by their doctor for STDs and pronounced clean. You never ever want to get an STD like HIV (just using the strongest example here) and then tell yourself later that "if only I hadn't trusted him when he said he never had sex with anyone else". Your body is your own, and you should do your utmost to take care of it. Not trying to lecture you in particular, but this is a general message to everyone.

As for the HPV DNA test, they can differentiate strains (not strands...all DNA is made up of 2 "strands"...HPV has several different "strains") by your DNA sample and tell you whether you have a high risk strain or not (in terms of HPV leading to cervical abnormalities). You'll have to get a doc to correct me if I'm wrong here but the virus that caused your plantar warts will be different from the HPV virus. The DNA sample they got from you was from your cervical cells, therefore they detected HPV DNA in your cervical cells. HPV is easily controled by scheduled PAP exams to detect any changes in cervical cells before they become cancerous.
