Re: Herpes questionsFrom: L (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 27 Jun 2002 14:25:21 -0500 (CDT)
Oral and genital herpes can show up in either the oral or genital regions. You can get genital herpes on your mouth if you perform oral sex when he is contagious. The sore does not have to be present to be contagious. From what I understand, there is viral shedding from the area before a breakout occurs. (If his herpes is sufficiently suppressed (and there is medication that can do that) and he doesn't ever have another breakout, you won't get it. Ask him if he feels a tingling sensation in the area before a breakout, I believe it's called a "prodrome". He needs to be aware of that so he can protect you. If he has a breakout on his mouth, but not his genitals, you won't catch it from intercourse with no kissing. If you decide to use a condom to have intercourse while he has an active outbreak, make sure it covers every lesion.
