Lowestrin as a form of birth control?

I have a couple of friends who have recently been prescribed Lowestrin as a form of birth control. As a result they no longer have a blood flow each month and they both are recommending it to me. From what I have been told this is a relatively new use of the drug for this purpose. Does anyone know of any long term medical complications/effects that could occur from long term use of Lowestrin as a form of birth control? Thanks.
