Long history of period irregularity... PCOS? other possibilities? From: lyndsey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 28 May 2002 13:48:13 -0500 (CDT)
I'm 21, and have had very irregular periods since I started when I was 15. When I started someone told me not to worry because I could be irregular for up to two years, but I still have this problem six years later. It is not unusual for me to miss my periods for up to three months at a time, and when I do have them in succession they are never during the same time of the month. It's not unusual to miss between four and six months every year. The pill usually regulates it, but I want to make sure I'm not covering up a bigger problem without checking. My mom was told that she couldn't have children in her twenties, shortly before she had me, and later had to have a fallopian tube removed when she was in her early thirties due to a cyst, but I don't know what the cause was. Someone told me this week that PCOS is related to irregularity, along with facial hair growth, acne and weight gain. I have these other things, but so do many women my age. I'm a college student now, and my insurance doesn't cover much. Is this worth pursuing, or is a doctor just going to tell me something I could hear here? Are there other causes for persistant irregularity like this? Are some people just like this without a cause?
