Re: How many days are you fertile in your cycle?

Lynn,

once you ovulate, the egg is only viable for 24-36 hours or so, but there are two problems: 1) You can't really predict when you are going to ovulate (without extra observation/tests). Every cycle can throw you a curveball and you can ovulate a few days sooner/later than you usually do. So having sex during/right after your period *should* be safe if you know that you usually ovulate on day 16, but what if this is the one cycle where you ovulate on day 11? 2) Before ovulation, your body produces mucus that makes it easy for sperm to survive in your body for up to 5-7 days. So you could have sex on Monday, ovulate on Thursday, and on Friday, while watching a movie, you get pregnant.
