Slightly Different Question about Pelvic Exam and Pap Smears

Although the common information about pap smears and pelvic exams stresses pap smears yearly, I have also been told by health care workers (and read some articles) to the effect that some women don't need pap smears as often.

Assuming this is true, is the same true of a pelvic exam? It seems to me that the pelvic exam and pap smear serve different purposes. So do women need to have pelvic exams every year, even if they only need pap smears every 2-3 years, or at any other interval decided between themselves and their doctor?
