Menstrual blood stays in my vagina

This is weird, but -

I am in my 6th day of bleeding. My period has gotten light, almost immediatly after being frighteningly heavy.

That's not the really weird part, though. I have been wearing a pad, rather than a tampon, for the last two days. No blood is on the pad - but there is still blood still inside me! I can see it when I urinate (blood just sitting, not mixed in) and if I try to insert a tampon there is blood on the applicator. (I did this last night, so I wouldn't bleed through, and kept a pad on).

Is the blood staying in my vagina? Could something be keeping it up there? This is getting worrisome. I don't know if I'm making myself sick worrying about these sudden problems, or if something is really wrong.
