Anovulatory Cycle

There has been some discussion in the forum about anovulatory cycles: the fact that very long cycles (more than 40 days) may mean a woman is not ovulating, and also that these cycles can be helped by BCPs (sorry, Dr. C. *g* I can't remember the other abbreviation).

Obviously, not ovulating would be a problem if a woman is trying to get pregnant. But what if pregnancy is not at issue? Are anovulatory cycle a symptom, or a disease? What sorts of problems do they indicate or cause?

How does a doctor determine for certain if someone is ovulating or not? If anovulatory cycles are a problem, how are they treated?

Thanks,

Tina
