BCP and OTC MedicinesFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netSat, 6 Apr 2002 09:48:16 -0600 (CST)
My doctor just put me on birth control pills to help regulate my irregular, painful periods. She said that it might take up to six months before the pills really did their job, and until then I might have to put up with the bleeding and severe pain I am suffering now. Before this, I was taking Midol OTC to help control my period symptoms. Taking the Midol at four-hour intervals, with some hot baths, helps me manage my pain. (Midol works the best of all the OTC meds I have tried; Motrin doesn't do a thing for me, and I have had differing results with Aleve, but it hasn't been *better* than the Motrin). My question is whether it is okay to keep taking Motrin for menstrual symptoms while I am on birth control for the same purpose? Also, since the birth control is supposed to help, does this mean the underlying cause of pain, etc. is likely to be hormonal and not organic? I am over 30 and not sexually active at present.
