Is period too heavy?

I have read that unusually heavy bleeding with periods can be a sign of problems. I do have a history of bad cramps and back pain with my periods, but I am wondering if my bleeding is too heavy? How much is too much?

I use the larger size tampons, which are quickly saturated; I must change them every two hours or risk leaks. This level of bleeding may continue for several days. (I can't remember counting exactly, but my periods can last as long as seven days, and I experience symptoms during most of that time).

I am thirty years old.
