'Shy' cervix?From: anonymous@obgyn.netSun, 31 Mar 2002 09:34:41 -0600 (CST)
I am 31 years old and a virgin. Because of my virgin status (which, I understand, creates very low risk for cervical cancer) and my emotional difficulty with pelvic exams, I have been told that as long as I'm not sexually active, it's okay for me to delay exams a little; in other words, I've been told I only need them every 2 or 3 years instead of every year. Last month I went to Planned Parenthood for an exam - not birth control or sexual issues, but just the annual examination, which I understood they would do. The nurse told me that she was using the smallest speculum she had, but this part of the exam hurt me a lot. I have always heard that if something hurts, you should say so and the person doing the exam should stop. I told my nurse that what she was doing hurt, and she didn't stop! She just told me my cervix was "way back in the corner" (something like that) and that it was "shy". I guess she did find it, because she did finish the exam. I left feeling horrible and dirty. And now I'm wondering - is there something wrong with my cervix? Is there such a thing as a "shy" cervix, and is it possible not to "find" it during a speculum exam? I am wondering also if I got a good exam, or if soemthing could have been "misssed". I am not sure why I feel this way - I am certainly not eager to be examined again, by anyone. Maybe I feel worried because the nurse didn't talk to me at all, so I don't know what she actually did, and I don't know if she did everything she should have. Is my experience common?
