For Maggie (right to choose a doctor)

Maggie,

No insurer or HMO has a policy of including only male OB/GYNs in their network. Not only would it be a ludicrous business decision, it would be grounds for a major gender discrimination lawsuit. Most likely, female gyns were unavailable due to an already existing patient load, or a female gyn in the network was located at a considerable distance from the patient, or for some other rational reason. The writer mentioned that the insurer/HMO was attempting to add more females to the network, and were waiting for some recent graduates to come on board. Since you are in medical school, you must know that the female to male ratio of resident OB/GYN's is at an all time high.
