An 8cm dermoid is going to pretty tough to remove without losing the ovary, and the odds are also pretty good that there is little to no normal ovarian tissue left anyway. Still, I suspect that he will try if it appears possible. Second opinions are always a good idea when you are uncomfortable with a plan. If done laproscopically, the pain is not too bad, nor is it very risky, at least not as surgeries go. You can live a normal life, have as many children as you wish, and enter menopause at more or less the usual time with just one ovary, as a rule.
