Iron supplements for pre-teens?

My 12 year old began her periods 3 months ago- they are rather heavy and last 6 days. Her eating habits are better than those of her peers, but not as good as I would like. I called the pediatrician's office to see if a vitamin/iron supplement would be advised. The nurse thought it was a good idea. Questions: is 18 mg.a day too much? Should I give a course of supplements for a couple of months and then discontinue for a few months? Also, the supplements contain about 400 mg. of calcium. Is this recommended? (she is not a big milk drinker). Her annual physical is not until July, and I plan to request a blood test for iron if not offered.
