maintaining hair

My question is about maintaining a clean look for my pubic hair. I am not interested in shaving or waxing it all off (although I do get a bikini wax once and awhile), but what are the healthy procedures in trimming it and making it look well-kept? It's very thick and rough and every time I trim it short, the area gets irritated. Should I use conditioners to make it softer so it will not irritate my skin as much? I didn't want to do that because my doctor recommended I avoid using any time of perfumes in that area because it is sensitive and I would like to avoid any skin infections. Please advise! Thank you in advance.
