Unneccesary Pap-Smear at an early age led to destruction of hymen? From: Emily (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 29 Nov 2001 18:46:19 -0600 (CST)
When I was 12 years old, I was diagnosed with ovarian cysts. As part of my medical evaluation, the doctor performed what he termed a partial pap-smear on me. I don't remember some of the details, except that it was a very traumatic experience and also very painful. My mother believes that the doctor did not use a speculum but just inserted a Q-tip like object. My questions are, was it necessary and normal for this procedure to even have been performed on me, and was it possible for the doctor to do this without usually a speculum (I didn't think it was). Also, I have recently discovered that my hymen is no longer present, and I cannot provide another explanation for this. Could this procedure in either form have broken it? Now that I am old enough to fully understand this it had become very distressing. Thank you for answering my questions.
