Re: Irregular Periods and DiscomfortFrom: Richard Chudacoff, MD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 27 Oct 2001 16:38:05 -0500 (CDT)
At Sat, 27 ..I do want to have children many, >many years from now and I was wondering what my chances would be later >in life of concieving and should I just drop the issue and see if the >problem fixes itself? The question always is: What is your goal? If you want to have regular periods, and as trite or basic as this sounds, birth control pills are your easiest of achieving this goal. Actually in my opinion they should be called decreasebleedingdecreasebreasttendernessdecreasecramps decreasePMS pills but for some reason no one will ever let me call them that. Thyroid testing, prolactin level testing, pituitary testing will not be affected by taking birth control pills. The only thing that will be affected is that they will regulate your periods, decrease your cramping and bleeding, and probably regulate your emotions. They also have the added benefit that if you are planning on having a menstrual period during your finals, you can just continue to take the active pills instead of the placebo, and that way you won't have a menstrual period during your tests. Your family practice doctor means well, but he doesn't know gynecology like your gynecologist. On the other hand if you have a completely different goal in regulating your periods, don't take the birth control pills and continued follow what your family practice doctor recommends. Finally, ultrasounds will not be able to pickup scar tissue. If you want somebody to evaluate that, the gynecologist can always do a laparoscopy, if the symptoms warrant that procedure.
