Amenorhea

I am 24yrs. old. I started my period when I was 13 and ever since that time I have never had a regular cycle. I would go for months and now even years in between my periods. First they said I would grow out of it. I havent. I have regular pap smears and exams and my doctor says that everything is fine and working okay; so she refered me to an endocronoligist. They did blood work and found that my insulin was a little high and suggested that I go on a diet very similar to the Atkinson's diet, (because I am slightly overweight) and that once my weight was down they would proceed from there. I could not stick to the very strict diet and have not gone back for testing. When I am on birth control such as Trivora I have my period like clock-work. EVERY month. As soon as I stop taking it, no more periods. I VERY much want to have children someday and want to know what is wrong with me. Sure the birth control keeps my cycle regular but if I want to get pregnant I cant be on it. Why is it years between my periods if everything is working okay and my pap smears are normal? This is a very upseting thing for me. I have very severe mood swings and wonder if this factors into it. Also, the endocronoligist said something about "Ovarian Cysts Disease" as a possible suggestion for what is happening, because all of my symptoms are the same. Can anyone please give me any information? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
