You can have bacterial vaginosis without any symptoms, and you can have vaginal discharge without having bacterial vaginosis. I really try not to treat anyone without symptoms, because then you get into the tail chasing problem of treating bacterial vaginosis, then treating the fungal infection, then treating bacterial vaginosis, etc. etc. etc. Spending the time, and money, to sit down with a private practitioner, especially at this was your first gynecological exam, is worth everything that it costs you. Pap smears can be performed in the presence of bacterial vaginosis, but often will need to be repeated in six months if there is an abnormality. As far as your painful periods, we do have a treatment for that, which I like to call the decreasedpaindecreasedflowdecreasedbreastpaindecreasedPMS pills, but everyone else makes me call the birth control pills.
