It is not uncommon, in fact it is more common, for a young woman to have irregular menses when she first starts them. The important thing is that she does not become anemic, but most menses will stop within a couple of weeks before that occurs. One should only become concerned if the bleeding is heavy, having to change more frequently than every two hours, or if it continues at this pace every day and night. Certainly if she becomes light headed or dizzy, call your physician. As a young woman first starting her menses, her reproductive system has to become regulated, and the first ones are often irregular. And, as it is her first one, the lining insdie her uterus has probably been building up for quite a while while she was starting to produce estrogen. I used to tell my patients that it is like starting a cold car, it usually misses and sputters when it is first started up, then runs smoothly. Good luck.
