Genital Warts

My boyfriend was diagonosed with genital warts nine years ago and that was the last time that he has seen a doctor about them. There was only one or two and at that time they were burned off. Since then he has only had about one re-occurance per year usually being only one small bump towards the top of his penis that he said looks like a bug bite that lasted only a couple days without any treatment. He was told nine years ago that they were only able to be spread when active (when you can see it). I was wondering if he had something other then warts because from what I have read, they don't look like a bug bite and they last longer then a couple days. Before me he was married and in that relationship for about seven years and his ex-wife does not have them. She has also had a baby and from what I read, if you do have them and have a baby they would become very bad . . . this is also why I wonder if this is what he really has because I read that in most relationships your partner becomes infected. They really never used condoms because they were trying to have a baby for at least three of the years. Are they only contagious whey "active"? Is it possible he he has something other then genital warts? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
